Chapter Six

Paige found it hard to sleep despite how soft the bed was. She kept peeking at the moon from behind the small gap in the blackout curtains in Vera’s room, wondering if, somewhere out there, was a werewolf searching for her, out for a taste of her blood.

She slept a little once dawn began to break, but she felt awful when she woke up. Between the abrupt change in her routine and her fear, now add in the whole Zeke thing, she wasn’t sure how to feel.

Vera and Shayla were awake already as Paige and Maura stumbled out of the bedroom, both wiping sleep from their eyes. The two were cooking and laughing at something while music played on low.

“Hey, I had a thought,” Paige said by way of greeting. “If the werewolves have to be in full wolf form, wouldn’t they be unable to get into my apartment or office because of, you know, the whole not having thumbs thing?”

Vera chuckled. “After a few hours, they can shift back, but the moonsickness is still there, so it was best to keep you safe last night.”

“Oh. Well, thank you so much, again, for letting me stay. I don’t seem like it, but I appreciate it. I was able to forget about what was going on for a while,” Paige said.

“Anytime. I bet Jon loved having an excuse to stay at a hotel. But next time, we’ll go to the fancy hotel,” Vera promised.

The four of them sat down to breakfast. And not much later, the three youngest had to leave. The results from the tests on the fur would be in, and Paige needed to know what to do next based on them.

Despite all that, she felt rather relaxed as she got into her car. A night spent carefree with friends was exactly what she needed. Typically, she wasn’t comfortable in other people’s homes, but every time she visited the Kings, she felt like she was home.

The shop was closed this early on Sundays, as most witches liked to see the sunrise, set altars, and do other personal things during the morning hours. So the shop was dark and empty as Shayla unlocked the door.

Maura bid Paige goodbye and went upstairs, probably to sleep more.

Paige followed Shayla downstairs where she immediately proceeded to sneeze in quick succession, her throat and eyes itchy.

“Geez, that’s foul,” she said, clearing her throat a few times. “It smells like wet dog.”

“That’s how werewolves and wolf shifters smell to creatures with heightened senses, like other shifters and vampires,” Shayla commented, going to both cauldrons.

“Never been happier to be human in my life,” Paige muttered.

“Okay … I have names. It’s not the same shifter in both places,” Shayla said. “Clifton Himmel and … Edwin Randle?”

“Like Zeke?” Paige asked.

“Not spelled the same.” Shayla showed her the names, and Paige wrote them both down.

“I wish it was the same guy. Two werewolves hunting in the city and apparently wanting me out of the picture is a bit much,” Paige commented.
